This park is 20 miles east of Lucaya on the East Sunrise Highway and is easily accessible by taxi, tour bus, moped, auto, or public bus (take the bus to High Rock and make arrangements with the driver to drop you off and pick you up). The park is the result of efforts by the Bahamas National Trust, with some help from Operation Raleigh. In addition to its wealth of flora and fauna, the 40-acre park has a number of special and interesting features. Extending on both sides of the highway, it features a long, looping walk and a series of caves to the north, with a large mangrove swamp and deserted beach area to the south.
The parking lot is on the north side of the road. From there, follow the path to Ben’s Cave, the first of two caves, named for Ben Rose, the diver and biologist who discovered it. Ben’s Cave is part of an underground, underwater system of caverns said to be among the largest of its kind in the world. The cave is also home to the tiny remipedia (oar foot), a crustacean found nowhere else in the world. A little further on along the trail you’ll see another opening.
This is the Burial Mound Cave, where, in 1986, archaeologists found four skeletons on the floor, along with evidence of pre-Columbian settlement. The skeletons were the remains of a group of local Lucayan Indians.
